Derby 101 Open Skate Starting Soon!
We are currently getting ready to start up the 2015 season! As we work at get back into the swing of things we’d love to open our doors to those interested in playing! Rather than do a one-time tryout, we will be hosting five open skate sessions! This will allow prospective players (with any level of skating skills) to get a true taste of the sport as well as the responsibilities associated with joining.
These sessions will be 1-hour long on Sundays from 5-6 PM at Camelot Bowling Center in Portage, IN beginning February 1st through March 1st. The sessions will work on the basics of skating, proper falling, transitions and an introduction to roller derby. You will also have the chance to interact with many of our skaters and can ask questions about the gear, the sport, the costs, etc. We will encourage you to arrive 20 minutes early to be geared up and ready to skate by 5 PM.
We will do our best to supply the majority of the gear you will need for the open skate, including skates, but if you have the gear, feel free to bring your own. Please see our sign-up form for further details of the open skate sessions and the needed gear. We ask that you email your filled out form to firstname.lastname@example.org. The form will allow us to collect enough gear, and hopefully skates, for everyone one attending.
The cost of attending will be $5 per person per session attended. Cash only please. This is a non-committal way to get involved with roller derby and the South Shore Roller Girls. After the open skate sessions, you we will provide a sign up sheet to join us if you choose to do so. Our Freshmeat (new skater) training will begin in April, so anyone joining will have the month of March to get all of their gear. You can attend one or all of the open skate sessions!
